The spacing of the pergola’s top runners is an aesthetic choice, and does not affect the stability of the structure. However, the further apart the runners are spaced, the less shade the pergola will provide.
Choosing the runners to be spaced 8" on center will allow some sunshine into this outdoor living space. One runner will be attached at the exact center of the pergola, and additional runners will be placed at 8" intervals on either side. Smaller spacing width will provide additional shade, but if even more shade is desired, consider adding a lattice top or retractable shade canopy.
