Main Runners and Top Runners are often referred to as Rafters or Joists. The runners are placed on top of the beams to form the main part of the pergola roof. 2x6 Kiln Dried Lumber (actual size is 1½" x 5½") are hand selected, cut, sanded and will stay straight for years to come (with minimal maintenance). They are spaced 16" on center.

The top runners are 2x2's (actually 1½" x 1½") that screw to the top of the main runners. This forms the "lattice" look of the pergola. For even more shade, you may choose a lattice top which mounts to the top runners, or can be substituted in place of them. Feel free to discuss this option with your Project Advisor.
