2-Beam Design
Our 2-Beam Pergola is a favorite, and reflects a classic pergola design that has been used for centuries! The 2x8 beams run parallel to each other, and the runners run on top of and across the beams. Actually, there are 4 pieces used to make up the beams. There are two 2x8's (per side) that rest on either side of the notched posts to form each "beam". This adds double the strength of a single piece of lumber. The ends of the beams are scroll cut out with the same design as the top runners.

The standard distance from the post to the beam end is about 18", but this design allows the flexibility as to where you would like to position the posts. If you need a little bit of leeway, you can move the posts or beams closer together. Be sure to talk to your Project Advisor for the limitations on this.

If you are planning a privacy panel, be sure to discuss this as well, so that the panels fit with the position of the posts.

These beams can span up to 16' without the need for a middle post. Pergolas over 16' will usually need the middle post. You can have spans between posts longer than the 16', but this requires a heavier beam. Talk to your Project Advisor for more information.
