The spacing of your pergola’s top runners is an aesthetic choice, and does not affect the stability of your structure. However, the further apart your runners are spaced, the less shade your pergola will provide.
Choosing your runners to be spaced 16” on center will allow a large amount of sunshine into your outdoor living space. One runner will be attached at the exact center of your pergola, and additional runners will be placed at 16” intervals on either side.
