March is the one of the most restless months of the year. Outside, the weather shifts daily, from piercing winds and snow, to balmy breezes and rain, to sunshine and blue skies, then back through the cycle again. Inside, we’re counting down the days until warm weather arrives, so that we can go out into the fresh air, and spend some time lounging around the porch, deck, or gazebo. At the same time, we’re also quite eager to open the windows and let the fresh air into the house.
Certainly, that’s one of the things that we miss most in the wintertime. During those months, when we have to put up our storm windows and seal every crack, in order to keep cold drafts out, the air in the house turns stagnant. Under these conditions, we expect some minor odors; but having pets or smokers in the house can make them much worse. Furthermore, with the number of things and places that naturally produce odors, such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens, refrigerators, and trash cans, if we’re not careful, the emanating stenches can eventually dominate rooms, or take over the entire house.
Of course, odors are not limited to specific times of the year; in fact, it seems as if each season brings new ones to challenge us. There are always many things around the house that can smell, especially if they’re inherently absorbent. Books, for example, can get musty and begin to smell like a damp basement. An easy way to freshen them up is to fill a paper bag with crumpled newspapers, place the books inside of it for a few days, and let the paper absorb the odor. Replace the newspaper every few days until the books are rid of the scent.
To give your towels and sheets a pleasant bouquet, unwrap some scented soap and put it into drawers and linen closets where they’re stored. Every few months, refresh them with new bars of soap.
Although litter boxes that are not properly maintained can be some of the worst offenders in the house, cat litter itself is an unbeatable deodorizer. To eliminate garbage odors, simply sprinkle some litter into the bottoms of your trash cans, and change it when necessary. You can also use it in a musty trunk, by placing a litter-filled coffee can inside, closing the lid, and letting it sit overnight.
No matter what kinds of odors invade your home, or how overwhelming they seem, there are always remedies for them. If you’re having trouble finding a solution, however, the one that works every time is to get out of the house, and into a gorgeous GazeboCreations.com gazebo.
